S. Korea is home to over 1,000 new short films every year, and many of them rise to prominence on the back of local fans’ support. As we close out this year, Kang So-won, a renowned programmer of the ‘Wide Angle Section’ at the Busan International Film Festival, joins us to introduce the three breakout short films of 2021. The movies that were carefully hand-picked by Kang were [A Winter Glove] directed by Lee Hyeon-joo, [Suicidal Student] directed by Park Jun-hyeok, and [GUT: Exorcism] directed by Park So-e. Through highlighting the three movies, we devote this time to touch upon the similar characteristics that many of the short films that entered into this year’s film competition possessed and the Korean independent cinema’s potential for the future.
