Simmani - Digging for a Heavenly Gift
1. Who are the "simmani"?
"Simmani" are ginseng diggers, who climb mountains in autumn to look for wild ginseng. Ginseng diggers do this only a few times a year, risking their lives in search of "the root of life." Master Hong Young-seon, the leader of all "simmani," took his colleagues this year as well on a perilous journey to look for wild ginseng.
2. Why are these people so devoted to their calling?
These people have been ginseng diggers for ten to 20 years. They have climbed mountains nationwide in search of ginseng. They believe that "simmani" can find "the root of life" only with god's help, regardless of their skills. Since ancient times the job of ginseng diggers was regarded special, and it even has its own traditions and customs. "Simmani" follow their rules with extra care. They give a special meaning to what kind of women they encounter, what dreams they have at night and what they eat. They do this to please god. Everything they do is rooted in faith. Korean ginseng diggers stay devoted to their calling despite the rapid technological advancement of modern society. This program takes a look at the reasons these people remain committed to their job despite its challenges and their efforts to preserve the tradition of ginseng hunting.
3. Will they find "the root of life"?
Koreans believe that only those who are blessed by god can find wild ginseng. Will Master Hong and his colleagues find this precious treasure? Join us to find out how their mysterious journey will end.
