Pres. Yoon to commemorate Gwangju Pro-Democracy Movement on May 18th Updated: 2022-05-16 17:05:31 KST

President Yoon will be visiting the southwestern city of Gwangju on Wednesday to commemorate the May 18th Gwangju Pro-Democracy Movement in 1980 the supression of which, by the authoritarian government of the time, led to hundreds of civilian deaths.
The trip to Gwangju is a campaign pledge the conservative president made earlier this year when he went to the National Cemetary in Gwangju, a city that leans strongly liberal.
At that time he said the spirit of the Pro-Democracy Movement should be enscribed in the Constitution, so eyes are on whether he mentions steps to be taken in that direction.
Upon Yoon's request, all lawmakers with his People Power Party not dealing with other government business will be attending as well a first for any main conservative party.
