Gyeonggi Province to hand out cash relief amid pandemic Updated: 2021-01-19 14:51:57 KST

The governor of Gyeonggi-do Province, Lee Jae-myung, has signed off on a payment of 100,000 won, or around 90 dollars, to all residents of the province as COVID-19 relief funds.
The plan came under fire recently within the ruling Democratic Party, with Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun arguing that it's neither wise nor fair to just hand out cash.
There's also been criticism that the policy could distract from efforts to stop the virus and that the Governor is politicizing the pandemic to solidify his position as a presidential contender.
The timing is not yet decided, but it's highly likely that the money will be paid out before the Lunar New Year holiday.
