American civil rights icon John Lewis has died at the age of 80.
According to the Associated Press on Saturday, the celebrated civil rights activist and Democratic congressman died of cancer.
Lewis was the youngest and also the last survivor of the Big Six civil rights activists, a group led by Martin Luther King Jr.
Born as the son of sharecroppers, he was the survivor of a brutal beating by police during the 1965 civil rights march in Alabama.
