ISSUE TALK: FFVD vs. CVID, what kind of denuclearization does the U.S. want? Updated: 2018-07-04 12:32:08 KST

Joining us in the studio today to discuss the North Korea denuclearization issue, we have with us Dr. Go Myong-hyun , a research fellow at the Asan Institute for Policy Studies. Dr. Go, thank you for your time today.

Thanks for having me.

1 - Mike Pompeo is set to hold follow-up denuclearization talks later this week. The U.S. state department has said it will not enforce a timeline on North Korea to denuclearize. However over the weekend John Bolton said that the U.S. is ready to dismantle North Korea's nuclear program within a year if North Korea cooperates. How should we take these two statements?

2 - Earlier this week a new phrase emerged over North Korea's denuclearization process. A state department said in a statement that the goal remains the final, fully verified denuclearization of North Korea. It's been coined now as FFVD, compared to CVID, complete verifiable irreversible denuclearization, the phrase that was used previously. Do you think this is a deliberate change in stance by the U.S. or is this just a slip-up by a spokesperson that we shouldn't read too much into?

3 - Many said CVID was unrealistic anyway. Perhaps FFVD is more possible and something that the Trump administration is further considering?

4 - North Korea has previously balked at the idea of CVID. Do you think they would be more receptive towards FFVD?

5 - For the first time in 15 years, inter-Korean basketball games took place on Wednesday. The North Korean media reported on the South Korean basketball delegation's arrival in a swift manner. There is also speculation over whether North Korean state TV will broadcast the games live, and whether Kim Jong-un will attend as well. What are your thoughts on the game?

6 - There are reports that North Korea is planning to invite Seoul Mayor Park Won-soon to North Korea. It seems to be to revive a possible inter-Korean football game series, and join a national sports festival next year. What's notable is that North Korea seems to be reaching out to the South. How should we take this?

7 - Another round of inter-Korean talks also took place at Panmunjom today, this time on cooperation over forestry projects. Can you explain to our viewers why forestation and what the two sides are looking to achieve?

8 - On Friday it will be the one year anniversary of President Moon Jae-in's Berlin Declaration where he laid out his vision for a new inter-Korean relationship. How well do you rate his progress so far?

9 - What does President Moon need to do going forward and what does he need to be careful of?

Thank you for your time today.
