President Moon welcomes second annual meeting of China-led AIIB Updated: 2017-06-17 08:49:42 KST

It's here on this beautiful island of Jeju that President Moon Jae-in made his international event debut as the president of the Republic of Korea as he welcomed the opening of the second annual meeting of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, or the AIIB.

Putting on hold the rift in relations stemming from Beijing's objection to Seoul's deployment of THAAD, the newly-elected South Korean leader hailed the China-led AIIB's achievements.

"I have high hopes for the role of the AIIB as it connects people to people, links regions with other regions to open a better future beyond the present."

South Korea strongly backs the AIIB's main agenda - sustainable infrastructure and connectivity across the Asian region, he said but don't forget: there is a missing link.

"The new Silk Road by sea and land will only be complete when the railway between South and North Korea is reconnected.
, .
I sincerely hope that peace on the Korean Peninsula will contribute to the stability and unity of the Asian region."

"While the South Korean leader vowed to beef up his country's support for the young multilateral development bank and to lend the nation's industrialization expertise to bridge emerging and developed economies there is another message that resonates loud and clear: no regional integration is possible without peace and stability between the two Koreas and no settlement on the Korean peninsula is possible without the cooperation of its regional neighbors especially China.
From the second annual meeting of the AIIB in Jeju, Moon Connyoung, Arirang News."
