Rising demand for single-friendly home appliances transforms market Updated: 2016-12-19 06:29:05 KST

This small kimchi refrigerator was designed for single-person households, so people who live alone can store small amounts of the side dish in optimal conditions.
Rice cookers, which used to be designed for families of four, now come in smaller sizes.
And wall-mounted washing machines also target singles who live in smaller spaces.
Korea's home appliance market is quickly transforming itself to accommodate single-person households, which accounted for 27 percent of household types in Korea as of last year, outnumbering all other household types.

"The combined sales of small appliances have surpassed the two-million mark. The small home appliance lineup targeting single people is expected to grow in line with the trend."

China, which had 66 million one-person homes registered as of 2014, is already experiencing rapid growth in its small appliance market.
Korean manufacturers have also caught on to the trend, with more and more companies rolling out appliances for single-person households, and experts say industries targeting single people will only continue to grow.
