Southern Sudan Expects to Double its Oil Production in 3 Years Updated: 2011-01-10 00:00:00 KST

With Southern Sudan's referendum leading many to anticipate a new African nation, there is a prospect that Southern Sudan may see its oil production double in three years.
According to the UAE daily The National, the Minister of Energy and Mining, Garang Diing Akuong, expects Southern Sudan's oil production to double from 450-thousand barrels to 1 million barrels per day within three years.
The minister added that the north and the south need to cooperate regardless of unity or secession since the longest oil pipeline is in the north while the majority of Sudan's oil exists in the south.
To help reach higher production targets the minister said foreign investment would be welcome.
