Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov again condemned North Korea for its artillery fire on Yeonpyeong Island and called for North Korea to halt any further attacks.
Speaking at a news briefing in Moscow Lavrov denounced the incident as "unacceptable" after earlier this week saying that the assault "deserves to be condemned".
The Foreign Minister emphasized that shelling waters is "one thing" but targeting residential areas on land is on a completely different level.
Consultations among United Nations Security Council members are currently underway according to Lavrov who said he expects a statement from the peace and security maintaining body to be released soon.
Moscow has urged Seoul and Pyongyang to avoid any retaliatory measures that may result in more casualties.
