The U.S. is expected to soon roll out newly updated COVID-19 vaccines that target the omicron subvariants BA.4 and BA.5 as well as the original strain of the virus.
White House Covid coordinator Dr. Ashish Jha( ) told NBC News on Wednesday that the newly updated Covid vaccines will be available to all Americans over the age of 12 in a few weeks.
This comes as BA.5 accounts for nearly 90 percent of new Covid cases in the U.S.
The country has been recording about 100-thousand new infections a day, but the actual number of cases is believed to be much higher due to at-home tests that are not reported to health authorities.
White House's chief medical advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci also said Thursday that the updated boosters would provide better protection against newly emerging variants.
