Washington has expressed support for President Yoon Suk-yeol's plans to resume diplomacy with North Korea.
U.S. State Department Press Secretary Ned Price said during a briefing Monday that the U.S. will continue to work closely with South Korea to that end.
Emphasizing trilateral cooperation between Seoul, Washington and Tokyo, he explained that it is America's shared goal with Seoul as well as other allies and partners, to achieve the complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.
He then urged the North to return to dialogue, which he says can result in practical, pragmatic steps to achieve the ultimate denuclearization goal.
The comments come on the heels of President Yoon's offer to help significantly enhance the North's economy if and when the regime takes steps to denuclearize.
In his first Liberation Day address Monday, Yoon explained that this was part of the (quote) "audacious initiative" that he first presented during his inaugural address three months ago.
He also stressed that Pyeongyang's denuclearization is essential for sustainable peace on the Korean Peninsula, in Northeast Asia and around the world.
