Pres. Yoon proposes 'audacious' support plan for N. Korea, will to improve Seoul-Tokyo relations Updated: 2022-08-15 09:28:06 KST

South Korea must improve relations with Japan by overcoming historical disputes and achieve peace with North Korea as key steps towards boosting stability and security of Northeast Asia and beyond.
That's coming from President Yoon Suk-yeol at a ceremony marking 77 years since the nation's liberation from Japan's colonial rule.

"We must swiftly improve Korea-Japan relations by upholding the Kim Dae-jung-Obuchi Declaration, a blueprint for a comprehensive future for bilateral relations. Based on mutual respect, the two countries and people must contribute to the peace and prosperity of the international community through extensive cooperation on economy, security, social and cultural exchanges."

Seoul, Tokyo ties have been at a record low over disputes such as Japan's wartime sex slavery and the use of forced labor among others.
Yoon also reiterated his promise to provide North Korea with wide-ranging aid if Pyeongyang cease nuclear weapons development and embarked on a "genuine and substantive" process of denuclearization.
