June Huh becomes first mathematician of Korean descent to win Fields Medal Updated: 2022-07-06 13:11:45 KST

The world's highest honor for young mathematics, the Fields Medal, has been awarded to June Huh, a Princeton University professor of Korean descent.
It's the first time someone of Korean descent has won the prize.
President Yoon Suk-yeol has sent his congratulations.

June Huh, a Princeton University professor of Korean descent, has won the highest honor in mathematics.
Huh on Tuesday was named as this year's winner of the Fields Medal.
This internationally renowned prize, given once every four years, is for high-achieving mathematicians under the age of 40.
Aged 39, June Huh had made it just in time with his contributions, which includes solving the Rota Conjecture and the Reeds Conjecture.
Huh was born in California in 1983 but moved to South Korea at the age of two.
He grew up in Korea and studied physics and astronomy at Seoul National University.
His mathematical endeavors started at the University's graduate school.
He then went on to earn a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan in 2014.
But he didn't start out as a math prodigy.
In his teens, he dreamt of becoming a poet, and even dropped out of high school to pursue his passion.
But a chance encounter in his college years with Heisuke Hironaka, a Japanese Fields medal winner. who had later become a mentor to Huh, put him back onto mathematics.
President Yoon Suk-yeol said that Huh's medal win is especially meaningful because Huh is mathematician who studied in Korea from childhood up until graduate school.
He also said that this is a win for South Korea and is a reminder that the country has entered the ranks of countries that're advanced in mathematics.

Yoon also offered encouragement saying he hopes professor Huh becomes a compass to guide others on the roadmap of human intellect.
