Sickness allowance given to employees unable to work due to sickness, injury starting Monday Updated: 2022-07-04 17:14:42 KST

The South Korean government has launched a year-long trial project, starting today, guaranteeing employees sick pay of up to 60 percent of the minimum wage.

Run by the Health Ministry, the new system will apply to workers aged 15 to 65.

The pilot program will be in six different regions, including Seoul's Jongno-gu District, before the government officially implements it in 2025.

Germany first introduced the sick pay system in 1883, and there are similar programs now in most OECD countries.
The pandemic highlighted the need for such a policy here in South Korea.
