The WHO Regional Director for Europe called on governments and civil society in Europe to scale up efforts to prevent monkeypox from establishing itself across a growing geographical area, warning that the number of cases has tripled in the region over the past two weeks.
Dr. Hans Kluge said Friday that urgent and coordinated action is crucial in order to reverse the ongoing spread of the disease, calling Europe the origin of the virus.
Nearly 90 percent of the total of around 45-hundred monkeypox cases are from Europe.
The WHO is yet to issue a public health emergency on the outbreak.
