Samsung Electronics has become the world's first company to start mass producing 3-nanometer-class chips.
The world's top memory chipmaker said, compared to the conventional 5 nanometers, 3-nanometer technology can reduce power consumption by up to 45 percent.
It can also improve performance by 23 percent, and the chips take up 16 percent less area.
By becoming the first in the world to reach 3 nanometers, Samsung is hoping to gain new clients ahead of its Taiwanese rivalTSMC in contract chip manufacturing.
Although Samsung did not directly name the clients for its advanced foundry technology, analysts say the initial users are expected to be Samsung itself and companies in China.
