Swimming's global governing body, FINA, announced on Sunday that it passed a vote to restrict transgender women from participating in elite female competitions.
In a vote cast by 152 national federations during the Budapest swimming world championships, 71-percent backed the measure.
The decision follows a scientific report which indicated that even after medically lowering their testosterone levels, transgender women still have an advantage over cisgender female swimmers.
A new category will be created that allows male to female transgender athletes to compete.
