In Kazakhstan, where mass civil unrest broke out this past week, the authorities have arrested a number of officials, including the country's former head of national security, Karim Massimov, who's been accused of treason.
His arrest was announced on Saturday by Kazakhstan's National Security Committee.
Massimov was fired last week as violent protests raged across the country.
He's seen as a close ally of the country's former president, Nursultan Nazarbayev.
Kazakhstan's current president, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, said on Saturday that the situation is on the way to stabilization.
That followed a conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has deployed troops to Kazakhstan to put down the uprising.
