The head of the Foreign Affairs Committee in the U.S. House of Representatives, Democrat Gregory Meeks, said on Saturday that he hopes North Korean leader Kim Jong-un would sign a declaration formally ending the Korean War a step proposed by South Korean President Moon Jae-in as part of his peace drive.
Representative Meeks was speaking with members of the local Korean-American community at a political fundraising event in his New York district.
His remarks are notable as a public show of support for the proposal by a ranking American politician.
According to Yonhap News, Korean civic group leaders at the event asked Meeks to support a bill referred to his committee last year that would establish a roadmap to an end-of-war declaration.
