Nigeria's Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala to lead WTO Updated: 2021-02-16 14:46:06 KST

The World Trade Organization has confirmed as its new Director-General the first African and also the first woman to hold the post Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.
Speaking in a press conference for the announcement, Okonjo-Iweala vowed to take on the global economic and health challenges caused by the pandemic.
She was elected unanimously by the WTO's 164 members after the last remaining rival candidate, South Korean trade minister Yoo Myung-hee, withdrew from the race.
An economist and former finance minister of Nigeria, Okonjo-Iweala will start her job on March 1st for a term that will last four-and-a-half years and is renewable.
