36 new COVID-19 patients confirmed in S. Korea Updated: 2020-02-20 13:55:26 KST

The number of coronavirus cases here in South Korea is now at 87.
Today, the country confirmed 36 new cases.
For more on this, our Eum Ji-young is on the line for us.
So Ji-young, where are we seeing all these new cases?

Devin, 35 out of the 36 newly confirmed cases were from Daegu and the neighboring Gyeongsangbuk-do Province in the southeast of the country.
28 cases in Daegu and 7 in Gyeongsangbuk-do Province to be exact.
Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced on Thursday that most of these patients are linked to the Shincheonji Church of Jesus - which was visited by the country's 31st confirmed patient.
Two of the other confirmed cases in Gyeongsangbuk-do Province are two men in their 50s who, according to health officials, caught the virus at Cheongdo Daenam hospital.
The 31st confirmed patient has been found to have visited that hospital.
Health authorities are still trying to figure out how the other five people caught the virus.
Now the number of cases in Daegu and Gyeongsangbuk-do Province alone has reached 53 which is over 60 percent of the total confirmed cases in the country.
Currently, more than 1,6-hundred people are being tested for the virus and majority of them are from these two regions.
With most new cases confirmed in Daegu and Gyeongsangbuk-do province, Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Thursday that community-based transmission has started and that it is in its early stage.
So starting from today, people who have not been abroad recently but show symptoms of the coronavirus can also get tested.
If they are diagnosed with any type of unidentified pneumonia, they will also be isolated in one-person hospital rooms.

And the other new case was confirmed in Seoul.
What do we know about this patient?

This patient was diagnosed with the coronavirus in a clinic in Jongno-gu District in downtown Seoul.
The clinic is just a few hundred meters from a kindergarten for the government complex in Seoul.
And a person from this kindergarten had been in the clinic on the same day as the patient.
Health authorities advice people to avoid visiting hospitals unless necessary.
Those that have a cold but no fever should stay home to avoid cross-infection from visiting hospitals.
As the spread of the virus for now is mostly in Daegu and Gyeongsangbuk-do Province, the government has decided to keep the crisis alert at the current "orange" level, which is the 3rd highest on the four-tiered system.
Orange means the disease is spreading in limited areas and the highest level "red" means that the infection is taking place across society in general.
However, the government pledged to go all-out to curb further spread of the virus.
That's all for now but I'll bring more updates in our later newscasts. Back to you Devin.
