N. Korea releases photos from latest test of weapon resembling U.S. ATACMS Updated: 2019-08-17 14:10:36 KST

North Korea says it tested a new weapon on Friday and released photos of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un inspecting the launch site.
The Korean Central News Agency said Saturday, new achievements have been made to strengthen national defense that could be significant milestones in its weapons development.
KCNA did not provide other details of the weapon, but military sources say the weapon seems to resemble the U.S. Army's surface-to-surface missile system ATACMS, similar to the one the North fired last Saturday.
Citing experts, the Washington Post reported Thursday the latest round of tests could pressure the U.S. to return to the negotiating table with a better offer than what was presented at the Hanoi summit in February.
It said although U.S. President Donald Trump has brushed off concerns of the tests saying they're "short-range", the weapons tests conducted in the past four months have put U.S. and South Korean troops in the Korean Peninsula on high alert.
The report cited missile experts saying significant improvements have been made in the North's missile capabilities that could penetrate South Korea's missile defense shield.
Also, it said the tests have driven a wedge in diplomatic ties between Washington and Seoul with President Trump defending the North's right to test missiles while expressing his own reservations about the joint South Korea-U.S. military drills.
