AI semiconductors used to develop new face recognition device Updated: 2017-07-17 00:41:41 KST

Recent technological achievements in the AI industry are employing machines to do tasks that were thought to be very difficult to achieve, such as recognizing a person's face with ease.

A research team in Korea developed a face recognition device called 'K-Eye Series', which enables users to figure out information of people just by scanning their face.

Like other face-recognizing devices or systems, including the ones embedded in modern day smartphones, the device has an image sensor, which automatically picks up and recognizes facial features.
But the 'K-Eye' also displays the person's profile, contained in a database.

This was possible as the device features an AI semiconductor chip developed by using deep learning algorithm.
Deep learning is the latest technological application present in numerous systems to enhance machine learning,…where computers learn for themselves based on an enormous bank of sample data.
This is what makes the device different from its competitors in terms of software and hardware.

"Conventional 'deep learning' systems run on big devices like GPUs,… but we have successfully embedded the system into the chip. That's why the device is portable and operates on minimal energy."

When fully commercialized, the device is expected to be firstly used by police forces and security firms,as it can enhance safety measures by make searching procedures of crime suspects and missing people much easier.
