Korea has welcomed the return of nine royal seals from the Joseon Dynasty.
The precious cultural properties were removed by American troops during the Korean War, and returned by visiting U.S. President Barack Obama on Friday.

"This is a symbol of respect that we have for Korean culture and the country."

"It is a very meaningful moment. I thank President Obama and the American people for returning Korea's national treasures."

Among the nine seals, three are state seals used by the king for diplomatic documents and administrative tasks, while six are ceremonial seals used by the king or queen during ceremonial rituals.

Among them is the Hwangjejibo , which Emperor Gojong of the Joseon Dynasty manufactured for the proclamation of the Korean Empire in 1897.
It embodies his determination for independence.

The Sugangtaehwangjebo , another seal that has found its way home, was made by King Sunjong and is the only seal from the Joseon Dynasty in the shape of an octagon.

The Hyangcheonsimjeongseohwajigi is a seal of appreciation of paintings and calligraphy work, used by King Heonjong.

These seals were taken from Deoksugung Palace in Seoul during the Korean War before being transferred to the U.S.
Under a United Nations convention on illegally shipped cultural assets, the seals were originally scheduled to be returned to Korea in June this year.
The U.S. customs authorities have seized two more Korean royal seals but it is expected to take a while to bring them back.
The journey for the seals' return began in November of last year, when U.S. customs authorities seized them from the family of a deceased U.S. Marine lieutenant who served during the three-year Korean War from 1950 to 1953.
Some 60 years later, they are now back in Korea, where they belong.
