Updated: 2022-01-20 17:15:52 KST
On January 20th, 2020, the first case of COVID-19 was confirmed here in South Korea.
Back then, hardly anyone expected the Covid pandemic to last this long.
The country is still on the verge of crisis despite higher vaccination rates and stricter distancing rules.
For more, we are joined by Professor David Kwak from Soon Chun Hyang University Hospital.
Professor Kwak, thanks for joining us.

South Korea was one of the countries hit hard by the pandemic at an early stage and there also were several crises centered around local churches and night clubs.
How was the country able to successfully manage the spread of the virus?

Now, the pandemic situation shows little sign of easing ever since Korea faced the fourth wave last summer and eased social distancing rules in November.
Today, the cases were well over 6-thousand and concerns are growing over the Omicron variant.
How do you assess the current situation?

The virus is also surging in other countries, including Japan and India.
Unlike two years ago, the world now has vaccines and treatment pills, but why is the situation getting worse?

When can the world hear the end of the COVID-19 pandemic?

The world has learned some lessons.
Other than coronavirus, humanity may face another unknown infectious disease in the future.
What should the international community do together against potential infectious diseases?

Professor David Kwak from Soon Chun Hyang University Hospital. Thank you for your insights.
