The South Korean government is working to acquire doses of an oral COVID-19 treatment before the end of this year.
The health authorities said on Thursday that they have been negotiating with pharmaceutical companies with the aim of taking delivery of the pills as soon as possible.
The plan had been to gradually secure a supply of antiviral pills for around 404-thousand people starting in February.
But the surge in new cases has brought that schedule forward.
