The outbreak of COVID-19 in the United States and the resulting 'stay at home' orders have triggered a wave of people seeking government benefits after losing their jobs in March.
According to the U.S. Labor Department on Thursday, the latest numbers include a record of more than 6.6 million Americans who applied for unemployment benefits just last week.
Experts say the actual number could be higher, as many newly unemployed Americans haven't been able to fill out a claim yet.
The past two weeks have also erased nearly all the jobs created in the past five years.
