Chile was Korea’s first ever FTA partner. The Korea-Chile FTA negotiations that started in 1998 came to fruition in 2002 and went into effect in 2004. Since then, the two nations have maintained very active trade relations. In 2018, both countries started negotiations to update the FTA in order to expand the items of trade and adopt new trade regulations. Over the course of 4 negotiations since last November, the two nations have discussed labor and environment, gender equality, anti-corruption, and other topics that are relevant to today’s society. Chile’s President Piñera visited Korea in April 2019 and it was the first visit by a Latin American leader under the current Moon administration. The leaders of the two nations evaluated the economic achievements made so far since the FTA went into effect, and reaffirmed their ties to align their partnership towards future-oriented goals in the 4th Industrial Revolution. This week we’ll meet with the Ambassador of Chile to S. Korea, Gloria Cid Carreño, to talk about the economic partnership between Korea and Chile.
