December 1st is the “Great Union Day” in Romania. In 1918 after WWI, Romania integrated the largest piece of land in its history and nowadays Romanians commemorate the historical moment on this day. But after the integration, Romania went through a long tumultuous time with the invasion by the Soviet Union and oppression by the communist and totalitarian regimes, being completely deprived of its freedom for a prolonged period of time. However in 1989, a revolution swept the nation in time for the end of the Cold War, successfully overthrowing the dictating regime. Upon gaining its long-overdue democracy, Romania established diplomatic relations with S. Korea, and in 2008, the two nations grew to become “strategic allies.” This week, we’ll meet with the Ambassador of Romania to S. Korea, Mihai Ciompec, to talk about Romania’s hard-earned freedom as well as the two nations’ 30 years of diplomatic history.
