South Korea, U.S. hit record low birthrates in 2020

South Korea hit a record low birth rate of 0.84 child per woman in 2020, falling from 0.92 seen a year earlier. The country, last year, also experienced a population decline, as the number of deaths outpaced the number of newborns. Figures show that other advanced economies including the U.S., and Italy are also showing strong signs of population decline. We discuss this trend, and whether the COVID-19 pandemic will cast a longer freeze on childbirth.
