Ep.119 From hanbok to kimchi...China’s effort to appropriate Korean culture

There recently have been false claims alleging that Korea’s traditions are part of China. Chinese press ‘Global Times’ reported on November 28th that China’s original kimchi-making method earned a certification from the International Organization for Standardization. The media also added that the accredit ion puts South Korea, the birthplace of kimchi, to shame. The Northeast project, drawn up by Beijing, is an initiative claiming that all historical facts of Northeast Asia are part of China’s history and culture. It is the ideology behind China’s assertion that hanbok, Arirang Pansori, and kimchi all originated from China. China’s cultural appropriation is spreading across South Korea’s cultural industry. We bring in experts to discuss the problems that emerge from the issue and what South Korea can do to wisely respond to such false claims.
