There recently have been false claims alleging that Korea’s traditions are part of China. Chinese press ‘Global Times’ reported on November 28th that China’s original kimchi-making method earned a certification from the International Organization for Standardization. The media also added that the accredit ion puts South Korea, the birthplace of kimchi, to shame. The Northeast project, drawn up by Beijing, is an initiative claiming that all historical facts of Northeast Asia are part of China’s history and culture. It is the ideology behind China’s assertion that hanbok, Arirang Pansori, and kimchi all originated from China. China’s cultural appropriation is spreading across South Korea’s cultural industry.
