After years of attempting and failing the state-run bar exam, ‘Gitae’ finally returns to his hometown for the first time in 10 years. Unsurprisingly, the life in his hometown is no better than his life in Seoul. He is still debt-ridden, can’t help but compare himself to his brother and also feels guilty for his old, sick mother. Then for his living, he starts to work at a worn-out theater and meets ‘Mr. Oh,’ the sign painter. With him, ‘Gitae’ gradually adjusts to his new life and finds some hope and comfort along the way.
This movie is set against a single-screen theater in the countryside. Dong Kwang Theatre in Dongducheon is the last single-screen theater remaining in Korea that captures the history and significance of Korean cinema. Enjoy an auditory intro, courtesy of Go Jae-seo, the owner of Dong Kwang Theatre in Dongducheon.
