Originally developed for military purposes, drones are now finding applications across industries. The Korean drone market is expected to reach US$ 308 million by 2023. Despite being a fledgling market, Korea is home to some of the leading players in the global drone scene such as Gryphon Dynamics, a manufacturer of cinematography drones. Its professional drones were used to film more than 100 Hollywood movies, including X-Men and Pirates of the Caribbean. Another Korean drone maker, Giant Drone, has independently developed flight control software and autopilot technology. At the forefront of drone research is the Korea Aerospace Research Institute. The agency has been working on a solar-powered drone, which completed its 90-minute stratospheric flight last August. A Seoul-based research venture is looking into new technologies aimed at reducing the noise that drones emit. Learn how drone technology will shape our future world.
