Former shopping Districts Seek Revival
From Dongdaemun Fashion Town and Euljiro lighting shopping complex to Seongsu-dong handmade shoes street, Seoul is filled with specialized shopping districts that were synonymous with their products in their heyday. However, recent years have seen them decline for various reasons. Local governments and business owners are doing all they can to revive their former glory. Analogue Meets Digital in Smart Blocks
A team of researchers at KIST (Korea Institute of Science and Technology) have developed smart blocks, which are toy blocks incorporated with communication functions, sensors, LED lighting and camera. As the blocks are capable of near-field communication, they interact with each other. A new form of wireless network called trigger network has been applied to enhance the ease of use. This technology has been developed not just as children’s toys but for the psychological therapy of children and rehabilitation of seniors. It will be showcased at CES next year to make headways into the global market.
