[Issue] Korea's LED Industry
 

Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are lighting devices that are brighter and longer-lasting, but they haven't become popular yet because of their price tags. Recently, however, companies in Korea and abroad have developed cheaper LEDs in an attempt to popularize them. And, in Korea, market conditions are becoming more favorable for LEDs, thanks to growing electricity costs and the gradual withdrawal of conventional light bulbs. 'Insight' spotlights how much progress Korea's semiconductor industry has made in LED production and how much potential it has in global markets.

Tensions between the two Koreas took another hit in late October when the North Korean government threatened to strike South Korea if civilian activists sent anti-Pyongyang leaflets into the North. The latest threat from Pyongyang raised questions about South Korea's national defense capabilities. 'Insight' investigates how self-reliant South Korea is when it comes to defending itself from North Korean provocations and what it takes to strengthen national defense.
