The concept referenced both the literary and the military class of the Koryo dynasty. In the Joseon era, it was normally used to indicate the nobility. As it began to be associated with the now normative concept of the "seonbi" signifying the intelligentsia of the Joseon dynasty, it came to be understood in contemporary terms similar to that of the undersized intellectual.
