The National Institute of Ecology, NIE, is a place where you can experience all the different kinds of ecosystems on Earth. The NIE opened in October, 2013 in Seocheon, Chungnam. It is the size of 92 soccer fields and includes over 7000 animals and 1,100,000 plants and trees!
The National Institute of Ecology is a place that explores the relations between organisms and between organisms and their physical environments. Its first director, Choe Jae-chun, is Korea's leading animal ecologist. He introduced the concept of “consilience” to Korea and helped advance the cause of interdisciplinary studies. He has also published 5 books on his field, over 100 papers, written or translated 30 other books and given countless lectures. In 2012, he founded the Biodiversity Foundation with Jane Goodall to help protect animal species and the environment.
This week on [Heart to Heart], we talk to the first director of the NIE, Choe Jae-chun. We'll learn about the research, exhibition and educational programs at NIE and discuss the importance of our connection to nature.
