On June 3rd, National Assemblyman Lee Goon-hyun was appointed Chairman of the Special Committee on Budget & Accounts. He has been tasked with leading the review of the new administration’s first annual budget. The 2014 budget is over 300 trillion won! It’s going to be a tremendous undertaking.
The finances of the nation are one of the three major areas that fall under the National Assembly’s purview. And the budget & accounts review is an important part of that. The national budget is more than just a very large number. It’s how policies and businesses take shape in reality.
The Special Committee was formed specifically to review the budget & accounts. This is the first time an administration has released the national budget to the public, complete with details about carrying out campaign promises.
Assemblyman Lee came to Seoul when he was in the 5th grade. With no one to rely on, he grew up in poverty, working odd jobs to make ends meet. But he was passionate about education. He eventually received his doctorate and took his place at the lectern.
This week on Heart to Heart, we talk to him about his activities as the chairman of the Special Committee on Budget & Accounts and about his lifelong dedication to education administration.
