Italy is one of the most popular travel destinations in the world and its capital city, Rome, has been a political and religious center of Western civilization as the capital of the Roman Empire and site of the Holy See. The country has the greatest number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the world and Italy and Korea have been maintaining amicable relations in many different fields since the two countries established diplomatic relations in 1884.
Ambassador Sergio Mercuri’s connection with Korea started when he was a young student in Economics in Italy. During that time, he learnt about countries in North East Asia, which had successfully emerged in a very short period of time from a difficult past. He promised himself to seize his opportunity to visit one of those countries, namely Korea. Soon after Ambassador Mercuri joined the Italian Diplomatic Service, he applied to work in Seoul and his application was accepted. He served as Deputy Head of Mission and Head of the Commercial Office in the Embassy of Italy in Seoul from 1987 to 1989, and was involved in the amazing experience of the Seoul 1988 Olympics as well as witnessing Korea’s democratization process. About 20 years later, Ambassador Mercuri came to Korea again and has been leading many cultural and economical activities between Italy and Korea.
On Heart to Heart, Ambassador Mercuri takes us to the wonderful world of Italian history, tourism and food culture as well as showing us his love for Korea. |
