Othello, which is considered to be one of the four greatest tragedies of Shakespeare, together with Hamlet, King Lear, and Macbeth, was engendered into the masterpiece opera Otello upon 6 long years of hard work by the great Italian composer, Verdi. This year, which celebrates the 450th anniversary of the birth of Shakespeare, the opera Otello will be performed in Korea.
Stephen Lawless, who has been invited to Korea as the director of the opera, is renowned for his dramatic interpretation of works in the world's major opera theaters and festivals, as well as his attention to details that brings vitality to the opera stage. In fact, he recently received the 2013/14 Dora Award for Outstanding Production (Opera division) for his production of Donizetti's Roberto Devereux for the Canadian Opera Company.
Earlier on in 2012, he had captivated the Korean audience for his directing of the operetta Die Fledermaus (The Bat). He received much acclaim from the viewers by making the work that is in between the genre of opera and play as interesting as possible and executing a rather exceptional method of incorporating Korea popular culture.
Stephen Lawless will be back on stage to dazzle the Korean audience with his opera Otello and operetta Die Fledermaus.
