Ko Un is a unique and inimitable figure in the history of modern Korean literature. He published his first poem in 1958. Since then, he has written over 150 books of poetry, fiction and criticism. His works have been translated into 27 languages. He put Korean literature on the map with his passionate delivery and presence at poetry readings around the world.
Ko Un has received just about every major literary award in Korea and abroad. His achievements and international influence are undeniable. This year, he received the Golden Wreath Award, an international honor that is given to venerable poets from around the world. He has been on the list of nominees for the Nobel literature prize for many years.
But the accolades haven't slowed him down.
He writes as much as he did as a young man.
