Miryang Baekjungnori- Farmers' Festival Held to Pray for Bountiful Harvest
Miryang Baekjungnori is a special play performed by farmhands who, after working hard to farm the rice paddies and fields, are given a one-day holiday by the landowner. It is held on the 15th day of the 7th lunar month.
Farming is a result of the collective effort of many people. From the past, Korean people have created farming communities called 'Dure.' According to past records, farmers contributed what they could on the 15th day of the 7th lunar month which is approximately one month before the harvest to host Baekjungnori, a ritual praying for a good crop that year.
The people of Miryang still gather together for this ritual on the 15th day of the 7th lunar month to pray for a good crop that year. This is why the ritual has been named the Miryang Baekjungnori. Baekjungnori is a traditional festival among farmers of Korea that dates back to 5,000 years ago.
