The government is in consultations with the family of former president Kim Dae-jung to decide on the format for his funeral.
The funeral will likely be carried out either as a state-funeral the expenses of which the government sponsors or as a public funeral which receives only partial state funding.
A state-funeral has been provided only once before for former president Park Jung-hee who died in 1979 during his term in office.
For other late former presidents public funerals have been held.
However this time the administration is also considering a six-day state funeral for the late Kim as his family has requested one.
The decision will be finalized at a Cabinet meeting possibly on Wednesday at the earliest.
