Construction of Korea's longest tunnel was completed this week in the city of Busan, spanning more than 20 kilometers.
The national rail builder unveiled the 20.3 kilometer underground tunnel connecting the Nopo district with Busanjin station through Geumjeong Mountain on Friday. The tunnel is located more than 300 meters below ground and the width and height of the tunnel measures up to 14 and 12 meters, respectively. This is part of the government's Gyeongbu Express Railway project, in which the country's high-speed rail, KTX, began operating from Seoul to Busan in 2004.
The second phase of construction is expected to replace the tracks between the city of Daegu and Busan by 2012.
