World News: Flash flood in China leaves 16 dead, 18 missing Updated: 2022-08-19 07:22:25 KST

For a look at news from around the world, we now turn to our Matthew Ashley standing by at the Arirang newsroom. Good morning.

Good morning.

Let's start with reports from China of a flash flood that has hit the west of the country.
Chinese state media reported Thursday that 16 people have died and 18 others are still missing after flash floods in Qinghai province.
Meanwhile, another 18 people previously reported missing have been found and rescued by authorities.
The sudden flood was triggered by an unexpected downpour that began Wednesday in Datong county.
This caused landslides which then diverted river courses into six local towns and villages.
Rescue teams of up to 2-thousand people and 160 vehicles have been dispatched to the affected areas.
The incident follows a similar disaster in China's Sichuan province last Sunday, where seven people died due to a huge surge of water in a river caused by sudden mountain rain.
