A vegan festival recently held in central Seoul showcased an array of new plant-based food items.
The most popular products were plant-based meat items.

"I'd thought that meat alternatives would be dry and have crumbly textures, but they are similar in texture and are as juicy as real meat."

South Korea's plant-based meat market has continued to expand, over growing interest and demand.
While most current meat substitutes are made from a mixture of soybean and flour, this new kind doesn't contain any flour at all.
The maker of the new product says it got rid of it to take out the gluten.
And the binder which helps the patties stay in one shape is made from plant-based sources only which includes sunflower seed oil and beetroot.

"When eating it, you'll think "It tastes just like meat',and second, realize that new ingredients offer better nutritional value."

The company has recently built new infrastructures to expand it production and R&D.

In addition to the growing interest in the sector, a public official with expertise in this field explains that plant-based meat will inevitably become more popular.

"The demand for sustainable foods is growing with the rise of climate change and food shortage crisis. We will actively support and foster startups that develop such products."

South Korea is likely to see a shift in perception of plant-based meats, from a niche product only for a group of people with special intereststo something closer to the norm that will be consumed by the majority of people.
