PPP National Committee to vote on approving transition to emergency leadership Updated: 2022-08-09 17:26:33 KST

The ruling People Power Party, now in a leadership crisis, is now taking the final step needed to switch to an emergency leadership system.
Today, it's holding a two-stage virtual meeting of its National Committee to ask some 700 participants for final approval.
In the first session this morning, members approved on a revision to a party rule to enable an acting chair to appoint an interim leader, not only when the party chair is vacant but also when the chairman is suspended, as is the case now.
The second session is taking place as we speak to vote on the appointment of the actual interim leader.
Five-term PPP lawmaker Joo Ho-young, who previously served as floor leader and acting chair, has been nominated as the interim leader.
Once he's approved, Chairman Lee Jun-seok, who's currently suspended over a sexual bribery allegation, automatically loses his post.
The party's plan is to complete the formation of the interim leadership by this Friday.
