S. Korea's education minister tenders resignation over controversial policy proposals Updated: 2022-08-08 21:16:26 KST

South Korea's Education Minister and Deputy Prime Minister, Park Sun-ae has tendered her resignation only a month after taking office following a nationwide backlash over her proposed policies.
The announcement was made Monday afternoon at an emergency press briefing.
If President Yoon accepts her resignation, Park will be the first government minister to resign under the administration.
There's been a backlash against Park among teachers and parents over a proposal to have kids start elementary school at age five instead of six.
She was also under pressure to quit over a plan to abolish foreign language high schools.
Critics said the proposals were hasty and did not take into account public opinion.
Park said she takes responsibility for causing controversy, and wishes children a brighter future.
