The American mathematician June Huh has become the first person of Korean descent to win the Fields Medal, the most prestigious prize in mathematics.
Huh is a professor at Princeton and spent his teens and twenties in South Korea.
The Fields Medal is awarded every four years by the International Mathematical Union to mathematicians younger than 40.
Huh was recognized for his overall achievements, the best known of which are proving two complicated mathematical ideas Rota's conjecture and Read s conjecture, which had been proposed several decades before.
He has received numerous awards, including the Breakthrough Foundation s New Horizons in Mathematics prize and the Samsung Ho-Am Prize for Physics and Mathematics.
