The World Health Organization convened an emergency meeting Thursday to discuss whether to declare the spiraling outbreak of monkeypox as a global health emergency.
This would give the virus the same distinction as the COVID-19 pandemic and ongoing global efforts to eradicate polio.
The international health body does not expect to announce any decision before Friday local time.
To date, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has confirmed over 33-hundred cases of monkeypox in 42 countries where the virus isn't typically found.
80 percent of those cases were in Europe.
